SONY REVEALS ARTIST BEHIND UPCOMING THEME SONG FOR “SPECTRE”

Sam Smith

NO, IT’S NOT TOM PETTY

Article by Adam Mast

So who exactly is singing the theme song for the upcoming James Bond film, SPECTRE? Will it be Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding, or Radiohead?

For weeks, Smith has been flat out denying that he had the gig while a photo of Goulding at famed Abbey Road Studios led some to believe that she’d be singing the tune.  Meanwhile, the forever reclusive Radiohead simply had nothing to say about the subject at all.

Well, this morning Sony made an official announcement and it came shortly after Smith posted this not-so-cryptic photo at Instagram.

The song is called “Writing’s on the Wall” and yes, it was recorded by Sam Smith. Sorry Radiohead fans.

Personally, I like Smith, but him straight up denying (or misdirecting…whatever you want to call it) that he had anything to do with the upcoming track irritates me to no end. I get the element of surprise, but this scenario smacks of all of that lame “Khan is not the villain in Into Darkness” business.

Ok, ok, it’s not that extreme, but I think you catch my drift.  Perhaps I’m just bitter because I desperately wanted Radiohead to get the job.

Too bad Sony didn’t just throw caution to the wind and have Smith, Goulding, and Radiohead each put their own unique spin on the tune. How cool would it have been to see three different opening credit sequences for SPECTRE in a theater?  That would have been a fairly unprecedented move. Not since CLUE’s multiple endings… Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall” will drop on September 25th. SPECTRE will hit the UK on October 26th and then make its way to U.S. screens on November 6th.
