I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THIS MOVIE!

I’m absolutely loving this poster for Jeff Nichols’ upcoming sci-fi chase film, MIDNIGHT SPECIAL. Certainly, it offers up shades of 80’s era “Amblin” and something about it screams UNBREAKABLE too. I love the sense of mystery, I love that the boy in the design is reading a “Superman” comic book, and I love the “He’s not like us.” tag. Very cool.
And leading the charge is Nichols! In just a few short films, this gifted storyteller has established himself as a true filmmaking talent. If you haven’t seen TAKE SHELTER or MUD, do yourself a favor and have a look.
As great as those pictures are, they are quiet and methodically paced. MIDNIGHT SPECIAL promises to be something of a departure as this is Nichols’ first foray into the bigger budget arena. Recently, in an Entertainment Weekly interview, Nichols sited CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, E.T., and STARMAN as influences in this tale of a boy with a “unique” gift on the run with his father. Sounds like there’s a little bit of FIRESTARTER in there too. Whatever the case may be, I’m a huge fan of those influences and can’t wait to get an actual look at footage from this movie.
Back in July, I was hoping that perhaps Warner Brothers would give us a peek during their big Comic-Con presentation, as MIDNIGHT SPECIAL was initially slated to open this month. Alas, the release was pushed back allowing Nichols to continue working on the picture, so the studio opted to keep a lid on things.
In an ironic twist of fate, WB is now opening MIDNIGHT SPECIAL one week before BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, and quite frankly, I’m more excited for this picture than Zach Snyder’s all star superhero opus.
When can we expect a MIDNIGHT SPECIAL trailer? No confirmation, but if I was to guess, I’d say it’ll be attached to CREED on November 25th.
