Tagline: When the order came to retreat. One man stayed.

It’s been ten years since Mel Gibson unleashed the underappreciated APOCALYPTO upon the world and if you ask me, that’s far too long of a wait between Gibson projects. This guy is a hell of an actor, but with THE MAN WITHOUT A FACE, BRAVEHEART, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, and the aforementioned APOCALYPTO tucked firmly under his belt, he’s proven to be every bit as accomplished as a director. HACKSAW RIDGE  looks to continue that streak.

With the story of a soldier who would go on to save the lives of several men during WWII  without discharging a single weapon (in fact, he refused to bear arms),  HACKSAW RIDGE looks to be a rousing, compelling, gorgeously crafted drama fueled by a beautifully nuanced Andrew Garfield performance.

This thing looks absolutely breathtaking! Huge in scope but intimate in terms of character. Even the sight of Garfield dropkicking a grenade seems perfectly at home in the world of heroism that Gibson has committed to film.

A bit of controversy has followed Gibson in the past decade or so, but from a professional standpoint, this amazing storyteller hasn’t missed a beat. Again, it’s a shame that he doesn’t have a larger outpour of work but one Gibson directorial effort in a decade is better than none. And between this film and his buzzed about performance in the upcoming BLOOD FATHER, it looks like we’re going to be graced with a whole lot of Mel Gibson in the coming months. I for one couldn’t be anymore excited.

A handful of lucky viewers will get their first look at HACKSAW RIDGE when it premieres at The Venice Film Festival in September. The rest of us will have to wait until November.

SYNOPSIS:

“HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss [Andrew Garfield] who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.”
