GHOSTBUSTERS 3 IS ON THE WAY, AND HERE’S A TEASER TO PROVE IT!

Five or six years ago, I literally bumped into Jason Reitman at the Sundance Film Festival. I had never met him before but was quick to tell him how much I loved THANK YOU FOR SMOKING and UP IN THE AIR. I then sheepishly told him how badass it would be if he decided to take the torch from his legendary father, Ivan, and make a new GHOSTBUSTERS movie some day. He flashed an awkward smile, jumped in his car, and took off.

Now obviously, I’m not suggesting that he took my comment to heart. I mean honestly, the guy doesn’t know me from…Adam.

That said, this is awesome news!

Sony has just announced a new GHOSTBUSTERS movie and for those who disliked Paul Feig‘s reboot, you may be excited to learn that this will be a present day-set continuation of parts 1 and 2. Probably the coolest bit of news regarding this announcement is the reveal that the film will be written and directed by…

Wait for it…

JASON REITMAN!

This terrific filmmaker also happens to be the son of Ivan Reitman, the comedy directing legend responsible for helming the original and its sequel. Word is, Reitman came up with the concept for part 3 with MONSTER HOUSE creator Gil Kenan so this won’t be based on one of the previously unproduced GHOSTBUSTERS 3 scripts that have been languishing in development hell for the past several years. No plot specifics at this point only to say that when Reitman Jr. pitched the idea, his father was overjoyed with the premise to the point of tears.

One has to believe that at least some of the original cast members will return for GHOSTBUSTERS 3 and that to some degree, this will be a pass-the-torch movie. As for whether or not Bill Murray will return, he did have an appearance in Gil Kenan’s CITY OF EMBER so perhaps that bodes well for GHOSTBUSTERS fans. Beyond that, here’s hoping for a rousing Harold Ramis tribute, a bigger role for Ernie Hudson, and the return of a retired Rick Moranis.

While we GHOSTBUSTERS fans await specifics as this film moves into production, be sure to feast your eyes on the teaser trailer above! Given that Reitman and crew haven’t shot a lick of footage yet, this is obviously just a tease but it’s a great one! Not only is it fittingly atmospheric but it also features Elmer Bernstein’s brilliant score, the Ecto-1, and the much welcome sound of a powered up proton pack.

Yep! This thing got me right in the feels!

Jason Reitman recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the history of GHOSTBUSTERS and his admiration for his father. He even gives an ever so slight taste of what fans can expect from GHOSTBUSTERS 3. You can read that article by clicking HERE.

GHOSTBUSTERS 3 is currently slated for summer, 2020!
