GHOSTBUSTERS 2016 Movie Trailer Announcement

Ghostbusters 2016

A TEASER FOR THE UPCOMING TRAILER ASKS THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION OF THE SUMMER!

Article by Adam Mast

For years, the mere mention of a new GHOSTBUSTERS movie has aggravated the purist in me to no end. GHOSTBUSTERS II, while not a total disaster, didn’t leave a very big impression, so the idea of a third picture wasn’t entirely appealing to me. The original is a magical product of the 80’s and my thought has always been that it should remain as such.

Bill Murray has been reluctant to return to the lucrative series suggesting that he wanted no part of it unless the script was something truly special.  When original GHOSTBUSTERS co-star and co-writer Harold Ramis passed away, it seemed as if perhaps the possibility of a new GHOSTBUSTERS movie was no longer in the cards. Shortly after Ramis’ unfortunate passing,  Ivan Reitman officially walked away and even potential replacement directors  Phil Lord and Chris Miller ultimately passed on the project.

Of course, GHOSTBUSTERS as a brand name is incredibly important to Sony Pictures, so you had to know another installment would find its way into multiplexes at some point. A notion that would continue to irk the whiny purist in me.  Until…

Filmmaker Paul Feig knocked at Sony’s door and pitched his gender-swapping take on GHOSTBUSTERS to studio heads. As far as I’m concerned, BRIDESMAIDS, THE HEAT, and SPY make it three for three for Feig, and while I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about this wonderfully entertaining filmmaker going the full on reboot route (rumors and various Feig comments suggest this GHOSTBUSTERS is set in an entirely different universe), the casting of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon, give me a glimmer of hope.

Cameos by original GHOSTBUSTERS cast members (sans a retired Rick Moranis)  and supporting player Chris Hemsworth  as a secretary (eat your heart, Annie Potts),  only add to a comical recipe that could potentially return this series to its former glory. Or, the whole thing could burst into flames.

With Feig at the helm though, the staunch GHOSTBUSTERS purist in me in feeling wildly optimistic. A major contrast to the way I was feeling about the possibility of a new GHOSTBUSTERS movie 2 years ago.

Last year, I had a brief exchange with Feig at CinemaCon in Las Vegas where he was on hand to introduce an advance screening of SPY. At that point, GHOSTBUSTERS was just heading into production, but Feig was visibly excited. He didn’t say much but he did suggest that in addition to bringing the funny, he was hoping to bring bigger scares to this updated version.

The teaser for the upcoming trailer is fairly generic and uses the “Who You Gonna Call?” marketing hook implemented by the original film. This will, no doubt, confuse those of us expecting  a complete reboot, but the usage of that iconic catchphrase was to be expected.

As for footage, there isn’t much. The official trailer drops on March 3rd, and at that point, we should get a sense of the comic timing and the overall tone at the heart of what is expected to be one of the biggest films of the summer.

GHOSTBUSTERS opens on July 15, 2016.  Here’s a look at the teaser for the trailer, courtesy of JoBlo.com.
