7 MOVIES TO LOOK FORWARD TO AT THE 2022 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

Article by Adam Mast

For the second year in a row the epic movie showcase that is the Sundance Film Festival will take place exclusively online and while it’s a bit of a bummer that movie fans won’t be able to share tales of cinema with one another in person you can still count on this venerable fest to bring the goods. I’ve been attending since 1994 and very seldom does a year go by when a Sundance title doesn’t find its way on my “Best Films of the Year” list.

The 2022 lineup looks to offer a little something for everyone. Per usual, you can check back here throughout a jam-packed 10-day Sundance Festival run as we’ll share coverage. The 2022 Sundance Film Festival runs from January, 20th thru January 30th. If you’re interested in taking part in the online festivities, be sure to check out the Sundance website for details.

In the meantime, here’s a list of 7 noteworthy films I’m particularly excited about;

DUAL

Karen Gillan, Aaron Paul, and Beulah Koale star is this story of a dying woman who takes part in a cloning procedure so that her spirit might live on. While there’s certainly a sci-fi element at the heart of this movie, director Riley Stearns also promises something of the off-filter dark comedy variety.

LUCY AND DESI

Hot on the heels of Aaron Sorkin’s recent release, BEING THE RICARDOS, comes an extensive documentary that traces the lives of this famed power couple. Directed by funny lady Amy Poehler, LUCY AND DESI follows this trailblazing pair from humble beginnings to a bout with superstardom.

AFTER YANG

Based on a short sci-fi story by Alexander Weinstein, this film made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021. It was adapted by Kogonada (COLUMBUS) and tells the story of a couple who purchase a refurbished A.I. android as a companion for their daughter. With the intent of repairing the android after it stops working, the girl’s father Jake (Colin Farrell) soon finds himself on an introspective journey of his own.

WHEN YOU FINISH SAVING THE WORLD

Actor Jesse Eisenberg makes his directorial debut with this story of a teenager whose slightly uptight mom is mystified by her musically inclined son’s online popularity. The plot thickens when she eventually begins to bond with a teen she takes under her wing at a domestic abuse shelter. WHEN YOU FINISH SAVING THE WORLD stars Finn Wolfhard and Julianne Moore.

MEET ME IN THE BATHROOM

A vibrant look at a pre-9/11 New York-based music scene that would produce a plethora of vital rock acts including The Strokes, The Moldy Peaches, and LCD Soundsystem. Directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace who made quite a stir with another rock doc called SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS.

SOMETHING IN THE DIRT

A pair of neighbors in a Hollywood Hills apartment complex are witness to something that, at first, terrifies them but before long, they begin to realize it’s something that could possibly change their lives for the better. SOMETHING IN THE DIRT is part of Sundance’s popular NEXT category and stars the film’s directors, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead.

FIRE OF LOVE

FIRE OF LOVE follows the lives of a French volcanoligist couple as they roam the planet tracing eruptions and their devastating aftermath. Breathtaking imagery and a tale of a most dangerous love triangle punctuate this highly anticipated documentary.
