Guillermo del Toro is arguably one of the strongest directors working in the business. His box-office revenue might not always reflect that, but that’s neither here nor there. Look no further than PAN’S LABYRINTH. That movie is a straight up masterpiece. So is THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE, for that matter.

Even del Toro’s big-budget tentpoles (see PACIFIC RIM) exhilarate and overflow with joy where many of del Toro’s more popular contemporaries (I’m looking at you, Michael Bay) seem perfectly content on dulling the senses with mindless action and huge explosions.

Many a fan were disappointed upon hearing the recent news that del Toro and Ron Perlman would not be reteaming to deliver another HELLBOY film (instead, THE DESCENT  helmer Neil Marshall will be delivering a new R-rated take on the popular Mike Mignola comic), but the good news is, del Toro ain’t going nowhere. This jovial Spanish filmmaker is here to stay, and we the fans are all the luckier for it.

While one can only hope that we will someday get del Toro’s much hoped for “Mountains of Madness” adaptation, I’m perfectly content with works of originality like the soon-to-be-released THE SHAPE OF WATER. Seriously, this looks like one of the most original love stories to come out in a great while and I can only hope the film as a whole is as wildly interesting, imaginative, and unique as this trailer makes it look.

Have a look for yourself and be sure to share your thoughts in the comment thread below.
