THE WRATH OF KHAN AND E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL JUST TURNED 35 AND IN HONOR OF THIS MILESTONE, FATHOM EVENTS IS BRINGING THEM BOTH BACK TO THE BIG SCREEN!

Article by Adam Mast

Alternative programming titans Fathom Events continue to bring classic films of yesteryear back to theaters; THE WAY THEY WERE MEANT TO BE SEEN!

This month, two 80s classics celebrate 35 glorious years of existence!

STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN

(Sept. 10th & 13th at 2 PM & 7 PM)

Arguably one of the great sequels of all time, STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN pits Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and crew against a fiercely vengeful Khan (Ricardo Montalban) in this epic sci-fi adventure that not only serves as a superior follow-up to STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE but as a sequel of sorts to a legendary “Trek” t.v. episode called “Space Seed” as well. Shatner is at his best as is Leonard Nimoy but it’s Montalban who truly chews the scenery as the charismatic, spiteful Khan! As directed by the gifted Nicholas Meyer, THE WRATH OF KHAN is a perfect representation of what a great sequel should be. From the picture perfect battle of wits between a hero and his adversary to a thrilling climax to the bugs in the ears to Spock’s selfless act, this film does the TREK franchise proud!

This special screening of STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN will include an exclusive interview with William Shatner.

Presented by Fathom Events, Turner Classic Movies, and Paramount Pictures.

E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL

(Sept. 17th & 20th at 2 PM & 7 PM)

Steven Spielberg might just be the most celebrated filmmaker of all time. While the impact of his work since the mid-90s is debatable (personally, I think he’s made plenty of worthwhile films since SCHINDLER’S LIST; SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and MINORITY REPORT being shining examples), earlier efforts like E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL certainly represent The Beard as his very best. This emotional powerhouse is so much more than a story of an alien left behind. This is an enduring tale of friendship. It’s also a story about a boy becoming a man. Spielberg’s sensitive (and exquisite) touch, Melissa Mathison‘s touching screenplay, an outstanding cast, and John Williams‘ masterful score make for an unforgettable motion picture experience.

While my favorite Spielberg film varies from day to day (choosing between the likes of JAWS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, and SCHINDLER’S LIST is no easy task), this masterpiece is always right up there in the thick of the discussion. Can’t wait to see this one on the big screen with my kids!

*Sidenote: E.T. fans can rejoice. This is the original theatrical cut. No walkie talkies!

Presented by Fathom Events, Turner Classics Movies, and Universal Pictures.
