COUNTDOWN TO HALLOWEEN: DAY 21-“KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE”

In honor of the witching season, we’ll profile a new Halloween-centric title every day throughout the month of October.

WE’LL GIVE YOU A STICK, YOU’LL GIVE IT A LICK.

KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE (PG-13)-1988

If you have a perpetual fear of clowns, this 80’s B-movie  will probably do nothing to cure you of that particular phobia. Beyond creeping you out though, KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE is bound to make you laugh with it’s bizarre and undeniably campy spirit.

This is an ultra low budget gem from the Chiodo Brothers. These thrifty filmmakers would go on to work on the likes of ELF and TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE, and as great as those movies are, there’s something a little extra special about this movie.

In KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE, clown-like aliens come to Earth via a big top spacecraft from another planet. It seems that these particular clowns have a craving for human blood so, they set out to wreak havoc on a unsuspecting small town in effort to quench their insatiable thirst. Standing in their way are a cute girl, her endearingly goofy boyfriend, a cop from the girl’s past, and a pair of nitwit ice cream truck drivers.

Will our fearless heroes be able to stop these monsters from consuming a whole town? Will you the terrified viewer be able to resist laughing and singing along to a brilliant theme song by punk rockers, The Dickies?

KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE is weird, there’s no doubt about it. But the thing is, it’s so damn creative! The Chiodo Brothers’ clown designs are pretty incredible and furthermore, these crafty storytellers mount some pretty great site gigs with very little money. Highlights include a cotton candy cocoon sequence, a scene in which a Killer Klown uses a human as a puppet, a chase through a creepy circus tent, and a shadow puppet bit that you’re not likely to forget.

This cult classic is certainly played for laughs, but again, if you have a fear of clowns, this movie is guaranteed to freak you out. It sits alongside IT and CLOWNHOUSE as the definitive creepy clown movie.
